Man robbed at gunpoint in a taxi at Mitchells Plain

A 33-year-old man has been arrested after he robbed passengers inside a taxi at gunpoint in Mitchells Plain. Metro Police officers on patrol in Tafelsig were flagged down by a taxi driver who informed them that two men had robbed his passengers. Metro police spokesperson, Ruth Solomons, says the suspect was arrested on charges of armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. “Armed with a description of the suspects and the direction they were last seen headed, officers took off and tracked them down soon enough. After a short chase, officers caught one of the suspects and found him in possession of a 9mm pistol and six rounds of ammunition. He also had a cell phone on him, which was suspected to be stolen.”

Drakenstein Municipality firefighters who were battling a fire at the KWV bottling plant at Paarl, in the Boland, have prevented the fire from causing damage to tanks storing more than 90 000 litres of brandy at the distillery. The full extent of the damage caused by the fire is unclear at this stage. The cause of the fire is also undetermined. Municipality spokesperson, Riana Geldenhuys, says three minor injuries were reported. She says the incident is being investigated: “Besides two KWV employees and a Drakenstein municipal firefighter who sustained minor smoke inhalation injuries, no one was seriously injured in the fire and all staff are being accounted for. There were 48 firefighters and officers as well as 14 fire services vehicles at the scene and they managed to successfully prevent the fire from damaging tanks storing 90 000 litres of KWV brandy.”

The Western Cape government has expressed anger following a gang-related shooting in Ravensmead in which a man was killed and four children wounded. The shooting happened on Saturday. Ferdie Samuels (25) was standing outside when a car stopped in front of him and a gunman inside opened fire. After firing several shots, the assailant fled the scene.

Bail application for two suspects postponed for tomorrow

The bail application of two suspects accused of the mass murder of a Vlakfontein family has been postponed to tomorrow. Earlier, the case was put on hold due to a power outage at the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court. Protests are expected as the Vlakfontein mass murder suspects return to the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for their bail hearing. FifitaKhupe (61) and 27-year-old Ernest Mabaso are accused of killing a family of seven and burying them in shallow graves inside their house in Vlakfontein, in the south of Johannesburg. The bodies were discovered last month. Mabaso is also charged with rape and theft. He had initially abandoned his bail application during his first court appearance.The motive for the killings is unknown and the state is opposing bail.
