The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (Bemawu)’s legal representatives argued today in court that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) must immediately stop the planned retrenchments and allow proper consultation. They brought an urgent application to the Braamfontein Labour court to stop this retrenchment process which can lead to 400 employees losing their jobs. The SABC board claims that the retrenchment proses is needed to resolve the financial problems the broadcaster has been having. Judgment in the SABC case will be handed down next Wednesday.
